Communism was responsible for the deaths of some 150 million human beings during the twentieth century. The world remains inexplicably indifferent and uncurious about the deadliest ideology in history.
The impending end of the Atlantic Era reflects the self-inflicted wounds that Europe and America have each suffered over the past decade.

Once more, Cyprus is on the international agenda, with the powers that be again telling the world that now is the last chance to solve the island’s problems, and the inherent threat that doom is the only alternative to agreement.
“Will Europe manage to set its foot down strongly enough . . . that there will be no doubt that the continent never will give up its founding values? Or will the commentariat and political elite continue to give way, inch by inch . . . ?”

Spain's "Alliance" has little to do with “civilization” and lots to do with cozying up to dictators and autocrats while reviling countries that stand up to the onslaught of aggression against Judeo-Christian Civilization. Simply put, it should be called the “Alliance of non Judeo-Christian Civilization.”

Europe supported its welfare state with borrowed money, a practice that can be perfectly healthy as long as both welfare state and debt are modest and loans can be serviced by diligent workers. Europe, however, is not nearly as wealthy as it thought it was, or as wealthy as its national way of life indicated.
Europe no longer believes in evil but only in misunderstandings to be resolved by discussion and dialogue. She no longer has enemies but only partners. If she is nice to extremists, she thinks, they will be nice to her, and she will be able to disarm their aggressiveness and soften them up. Europe no longer likes History, for History is a nightmare, a minefield from which she escaped at great cost, first in 1945 and then again in 1989. And since History goes on without us, and everywhere emergent nations are recovering their dignity, their power, and their aggressiveness, Europe leaves it to the Americans to be in charge, while reserving the right to criticize them violently when they go astray.

British foreign and defence policy is American, and Britain is simply a pageboy, despite the rhetoric. Cosmetically, of course, Britain will try to claim that it is independent, with the Liberal Democrat part of the coalition criticising, for example, the lopsided extradition law with the US. Not that anything will be achieved. But in defence and foreign policy, perhaps the only real gauge of a country’s independence and therefore sovereignty, forget it.

The Tories fought for a marginal victory. And the geopolitical parochialism leaves the UK along with the rest of a decaying Europe sliding into oblivion.

In 2002, a bunch of bankers from Goldman Sachs came to Greece and sold their services to the government of Kostas Taperman (otherwise known as Simitis), explaining how to legalistically flout EU regulations and borrow bad money, hoodwinking the European Commission into the bargain, using the by now infamous derivatives. When these derivatives mature, Greece is likely to owe so much that it could end up paying more interest than it apparently bargained for.
